Let’s face it. If you need data backup for a small business, it’s not the same as backup for your home. A business will have a number of different files that a regular home user will never have like – database files, publisher files, comma separated value files and the list goes on. I’m sure that Carbonite is great for pictures and word documents but your small business should not be running Carbonite if you have any serious data to backup.
Today a technician of ours attempted to move a customers files from her old machine to her new machine. The customer is one of our small business clients. The problem: Remote file access was down. It was down the entire two hours our technician was onsite. This kind of issue makes you wonder if Carbonite’s infrastructure and the application itself is reliable. Small businesses need reliable backup and it also needs to be reliable when you are trying to retrieve the data too.
Slow Support Response
If system reliability was not enough of a problem Carbonite also has a significant problem with support. Their response time is very slow and while it might be OK for a consumer product, you need a faster response from a provider when your critical data (i.e. financials, customer lists, etc) are on the line. Unfortunately, Carbonite fails in this respect too.
Slow Backup Speeds
So, we already have reduced reliability, slow response to support and now we can also add slow backup services. It seems, in an effort to control bandwidth use, that Carbonite slows down your backup speed after you reach a certain amount of data. While the amounts of data vary depending on what group of Carbonite users you talk to, some of the amounts are very easy for a small business to reach.
As mentioned before, I am sure that Carbonite is a great service for consumer use but for your small business, you are better off chosing another backup provider.
